The case involves the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, in which the victim's family has leveled fresh allegations. The victim's parents have said that their daughter's death certificate has not been issued yet. The family has alleged that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is not issuing death certificates, while the Panihati Municipality has already issued a certificate for cremation.

The court has given its verdict after 162 days and the CBI has demanded death penalty for the accused Sanjay. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta performs aarti at Vasudev Ghat: BJP promises to clean Yamuna in election manifesto; First cabinet meeting completes
New Delhi: Rekha Gupta, Sheesh Mahal and a message of change
New Delhi – During the swearing-in ceremony at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on February 17, the new Chief Minister **Rekha Gupta** completed her oath-taking ceremony and after taking oath at 12:30 pm today, performed aarti at Yamuna Ghat six hours later on Thursday evening. 6 ministers were present with her during this aarti, which makes this occasion special.
This year has seen a new change in Delhi's democratic system and governance. The topic of cleaning the Yamuna was a big issue during the Delhi Assembly elections. The BJP had raised this issue during the election campaign and promised that the Yamuna would be completely cleaned, which is being seen as a continuation of today's event.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Rekha clearly said about the CM residence called Sheesh Mahal in Ahmedabad, “I will not stay in Sheesh Mahal.” In her interaction with the media before taking oath, she said, “This is a big responsibility. I thank PM Modi and the party high command for showing faith in me. I never thought that I would become the Chief Minister of Delhi. I will not stay in Sheesh Mahal.”
In addition to PM **Narendra Modi** and **Amit Shah**, the Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of 21 BJP-ruled states were also present at this event. It is worth mentioning that in the previous meeting, MLA **Manjinder Singh Sirsa** and some other leaders discussed water, sewerage and cleaning of Yamuna water.
Six other ministers – including **Pravesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravindra Indraraj Singh, Kapil Mishra** and **Pankaj Kumar Singh** – also took oath. The Legislative Party meeting, which was attended by CMs and deputy CMs of NDA-ruled states, saw PM Modi, Delhi's Lieutenant Governor and CM Rekha Gupta and their cabinet members gracing the stage.
This new regime and the oath-taking ceremony herald a new direction of local development, democracy and transparent government. There has also been a controversy over the CM's residence in Delhi, "Sheesh Mahal", as alleged by the BJP; not least, some opposition leaders have termed it a violation of rules and have made the expenditure so far an election issue.
Amidst all these circumstances, it is hoped that Rekha Gupta's swearing-in and the future of this new regime will have a positive impact.

Shinde said- There is no cold war between us: We are working together, dismissed reports of differences with Fadnavis
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has denied alleged differences with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He said that everything is going well in the Mahayuti alliance (BJP-NCP-Shiv Sena) and there is no cold war going on between them. News of rifts between them came to the fore when Shinde formed a medical cell similar to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The opposition raised questions about Shinde's move. Shinde said on Tuesday that this new cell will not be a competitive arrangement but will work in collaboration with the Chief Minister's war room to ensure better services to patients.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also denied reports of differences. He said, "There is nothing wrong in forming such a cell as its purpose is to help the needy. When I was the Deputy Chief Minister, I had also formed such a cell."
Shinde's clarification comes after allegations by opposition parties, including Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, who claimed that a "parallel government is being run" in the state. Raut said that if the government continues like this, political instability in Maharashtra will increase.
Shinde's close aides said - he had done this before too
Mangesh Chiwate, head of the new medical assistance cell and Shinde's close aide, said on this issue that this is not a new initiative. He said, "Even when Shinde was the Chief Minister, I used to do the same work through the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and help many needy patients. Now this new cell will not distribute funds but will help needy patients."
Currently, the Y category security of 20 MLAs of the Shiv Sena Shinde faction in Maharashtra has been removed. An India Today report claims that only one constable has been deployed for the security of these MLAs. Also, there are reports of reducing the security of some MLAs of BJP and NCP (Ajit faction). Although the government has not issued any statement on this or the MLAs have said anything, media reports claim that Shinde is unhappy with this decision.

Will India convince Trump? Sitharaman's first reaction on tariffs, see what she said
Nirmala Sitharaman's new tariff measures: Changes in India's trade policy and preparation for reciprocal tariffs
During the traditional and bilateral dialogue between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump, the US has announced its import-controlling tariffs. If other countries impose 25% tariffs on US products, Trump says, "America will also impose the same tariff on you." After this announcement, there was concern in global markets.
In this regard, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave an official statement on Monday and said, "Through corrective measures including reciprocal tariffs and anti-dumping duties, we are trying to ensure that India becomes investment-friendly." She added that India already has the lowest tariff rate on US imports and negotiations will be held with countries with increasing tariff rates.
In addition, India has recently reduced import tariffs on bourbon whisky, grapes, vermouth and other wines to 100%. Earlier, the budget announced a reduction in tariffs on imports of textiles, technology and chemicals. According to a State Bank of India (SBI) report, if the US imposes high tariffs, India can get an opportunity to reduce its impact by its proactive trade policy, export diversification and restructuring of supply chains.
The aim of all these reform measures is to increase Indian exports in the long term and create a conducive environment for investors to strengthen the country's economy. It is clear from this statement of Nirmala Sitharaman that the government is now trying to rationalize its policy keeping in mind the tariff situation emerging in the global market.
These new tariff measures and reforms are expected to bring a new twist in Indian trade policy, which will increase the country's international competitiveness and improve the export sector.

Union Minister Athawale said – Hindu-Muslim marriage is not love jihad: Said – There should be a law for religious conversion; Maharashtra government formed a committee 3 days ago
The Maharashtra government has formed a 7-member committee to frame a law against issues like love jihad and forced conversion. The committee will be headed by Maharashtra DGP Sanjay Verma. The committee will include senior officials from departments like women and child welfare, minority affairs, law and judiciary, social justice, special assistance and home. The committee will provide legal advice to deal with complaints of forced conversion and love jihad and will study the laws applicable in other states.
Union Minister and NDA ally Ramdas Athawale has objected to this move. He said that there should be provisions to stop religious conversion, but it is also important to maintain harmony between society and religions. Athawale said that it is wrong to call inter-religious marriages love jihad, but there is a need to stop forced conversions. He stressed that if a Hindu girl and a Muslim boy get married with mutual consent, it should not be called love jihad.
Athawale defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that he works for the welfare of all communities and everyone benefits from his schemes. He said that Prime Minister Modi considers everyone equal and Muslims also get the benefits of his policies.
Maharashtra's opposition party NCP leader Supriya Sule has also given her opinion on this issue. She said that marriage or love is a personal desire and the government should focus on real issues. She urged them to pay attention to issues like the new tariffs imposed on India by the US.
The issue of love jihad in Maharashtra came into the spotlight after the murder case of Shraddha Wakar in 2022. In this case, Shraddha's boyfriend Aftab Poonawalla killed her and dismembered her body. After this incident, the BJP raised the issue of love jihad in the state.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in October 2024 that incidents of love jihad were not isolated, but more than one lakh complaints had been received, in which Hindu women were being lured to marry men of other religions.

Today, the Maharashtra government has started the idea of making strict laws against cases like love jihad and forced conversion. A 7-member committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the state DGP Sanjay Verma, which will guide the action on complaints related to forced conversion and love jihad. This committee includes senior officials from the departments of women and child welfare, minority affairs, law and judiciary, social justice, special assistance and home.
The issue of love jihad became hot in Maharashtra after the Shraddha Walker murder case in 2022. In this case, Shraddha was murdered by her boyfriend Aftab Poonawalla. BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, as the then Deputy Chief Minister, had said that cases of more than one lakh Hindu women being lured and converted by marrying them to another religion have come to light.

Modi said in America on Adani issue - it is a personal matter: Two presidents do not meet to talk about such an issue, Rahul said - if you ask a question in the country, there is silence, if you ask abroad, it is a personal matter; The curtain was drawn in the US too
Rahul Gandhi's attempt to corner PM Modi again on Adani issue
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi once again targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Adani issue on Friday. In a post on social media platform X, Rahul wrote, "If you ask the country's PM questions on the Adani issue, he remains silent. When asked about this issue abroad, he avoids it by calling it a personal matter."
This proposal is about an incident that happened during PM Modi's recent visit to America. In response to a question asked by journalists in America about Gautam Adani, PM Modi had clearly said, "This is not a subject for discussion on our personal matters."
Rahul Gandhi has raised questions on the relationship between the Adani group and the government many times before. He has alleged that the government is benefiting particular industrialists. However, the government and the Adani group have termed all these allegations as baseless.
The political heat over this issue continues. The opposition is constantly bringing this issue to the forefront in the campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while the ruling party is rejecting it as a political conspiracy by the opponents.

'It is wrong to advertise Revds during elections': Supreme Court's strict comment, said- 'People do not work because they get free ration and money'
Supreme Court's criticism and direction:
According to information given in Gujarati media, the Supreme Court has criticized the "free schemes" (like free ration, money) given during elections. The court is of the opinion that such schemes reduce the motivation of people to work, which is harmful to society and the economy in the long run. This comment touches on the ongoing political debate on "freebies" (free facilities) in India.
Discussion on housing for urban homeless people:
A bench of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Augustin Jorde Masih heard a petition seeking to provide housing and assistance to homeless people under the Urban Poverty Alleviation Mission. The court asked the central government:
- "How long will it take to complete this mission?"
- "Isn't it better to bring these people into the mainstream and make them a part of the country's development?"
Central government's response:
Attorney General R. Venkataramani said that "soon" housing for the urban homeless will be provided along with other facilities. However, the court termed this answer as vague and fixed the hearing again after 6 weeks.
Important issues:
1. Free schemes vs self-reliance: The court's criticism suggests that instead of free assistance, emphasis should be placed on providing employment and self-reliance opportunities to people.
2. Urban poverty issue: There is a serious shortage of housing for the homeless in cities. The court demands speedy and transparent action from the government.
3. Demand for time limit: The court has asked the center to give a clear time limit for the mission, which increases accountability in government schemes.
Consequences and further action:
- The role of the court in this case is active and observational.
- The center will have to appear with a detailed plan in the hearing after 6 weeks.
- This decision could have an impact on the design of future social welfare and political schemes.
Conclusion:
The Supreme Court's view is clear: focus on empowering people and involving them in the country's development rather than "handouts". This case will further the debate on the balance between poverty, housing, and political policies in India.

5% GST on salted popcorn, 18% on sugarcane, 18% tax on marginal value of second hand cars; Sitharaman says states oppose GST on petrol and diesel
GST on Daily Essentials and Controversial Commodities Key Updates Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently highlighted notable GST changes and their implications. These updates include a 5% GST on salted popcorn, 18% on sugarcane, and 18% on the marginal value of second hand cars. Meanwhile, the ongoing debate on imposing GST on petrol and diesel remains unresolved, with states opposing the move. Essentials and Tax Rates Salted popcorn, a popular snack, now attracts a 5% GST. While considered a moderate tax rate, it has sparked discussions about its classification as an essential or luxury item. Similarly, sugarcane, a vital crop for the agricultural economy, is taxed at 18%. This move is likely to impact farmers and sugar mills, potentially influencing the sugar production chain. The decision to impose an 18% tax on the marginal value of second hand cars aims to streamline the market for used vehicles. However, it raises concerns about affordability for buyers seeking economical options. The GST Debate on Petrol and Diesel Sitharaman noted that states remain resistant to including petrol and diesel under GST. Currently, these fuels are subject to state imposed taxes, which vary significantly across regions. States fear that bringing them under GST would reduce their revenue autonomy. While consumers advocate for uniform taxation to lower fuel prices, the stalemate persists. Implications and Challenges These tax revisions underline the government s focus on broadening the GST base. However, balancing fiscal needs with public sentiment remains a challenge. The agricultural sector, small businesses, and consumers are likely to feel the impact of these rates. The reluctance to include petrol and diesel under GST highlights the complexities of achieving tax reform in a federal structure. Policymakers must address these challenges to ensure a balanced and inclusive tax regime that supports growth without burdening specific sectors disproportionately.

The legal system is so bad it is rotten that another young man Atul Subhash committed suicide in Bangalore.
The recent suicide of Atul Subhash, a talented AI engineer from Bangalore, underscores the critical flaws in the legal system and its vulnerability to misuse. Atul, a specialist in his field, became a victim of relentless legal harassment, with his in-laws filing nine fake cases against him. These included serious accusations of rape, murder, and dowry harassment. The cumulative pressure of these allegations left him mentally, emotionally, and socially devastated, leading him to take the tragic step of ending his life. The Root of the Problem Atul’s case highlights how the misuse of legal provisions can destroy lives. In India, laws meant to protect individuals from exploitation—such as those against dowry and sexual assault—are occasionally weaponized for personal vendettas. This not only undermines the credibility of genuine victims but also puts undue strain on an already overburdened judicial system. The filing of multiple cases against Atul, without immediate and thorough investigation, reflects systemic gaps in legal processes. Such lapses allow the weaponization of the law, leaving innocent individuals entangled in legal battles that drain them emotionally and financially. Legal and Social Consequences The implications of Atul’s case extend beyond his personal tragedy. It raises concerns about: Legal Misuse: False accusations erode public trust in the legal system and divert resources away from genuine cases. Mental Health Impact: Prolonged legal battles can lead to severe mental health issues, as seen in Atul's case. The stigma associated with such accusations further isolates individuals. Impact on Professional Life: For professionals like Atul, these accusations can irreparably damage careers and reputations. The Need for Reform Atul's tragic story underscores the urgent need for reforms to prevent the misuse of legal provisions. Some critical steps include: Preliminary Scrutiny of Cases: Before registering serious charges like rape or murder, law enforcement agencies must conduct a thorough preliminary investigation to ascertain the credibility of the accusations. Legal Protections for the Accused: While protecting complainants is crucial, accused individuals should also have mechanisms to defend themselves against false accusations without undue harassment. Deterrents for Filing False Cases: Strict penalties should be imposed on individuals found guilty of filing false cases to deter misuse. Support Systems: Providing mental health support and legal aid to individuals facing multiple accusations can help mitigate the psychological and financial burden. Conclusion Atul Subhash’s suicide is a tragic reminder of the devastating impact of false accusations and an ineffective legal system. While the laws are intended to protect, their misuse undermines justice and leads to irreversible losses, both for the victims of false allegations and society at large. The onus is now on policymakers and judicial authorities to address these systemic flaws and ensure a balanced and fair legal framework. By doing so, we can prevent further tragedies and restore public trust in the justice system.
