Amarnath Yatra Bus Accident: Key Facts

1. Incident:
4 buses collided on the Pahalgam route near Chandrakot Langar in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir. Reason: The driver lost control due to brake failure of one of the buses, which led to a collision with 3 other buses in the convoy.
Damage: About 36 pilgrims were injured, who were admitted to Ramban district hospital. The remaining passengers were taken to Pahalgam by other vehicles.

2. Status of the Yatra:

More than 30,000 devotees have visited the Him Shivling in the 38-day Yatra that began on July 3. Last year, 5 lakh pilgrims arrived, while this year more than 3.5 lakh have been registered. New batch: 6,900 pilgrims (men, women, children, monks and transgenders) left Bhagwati Nagar base camp on Saturday.

3. Details of the yatra:
Route: Both Pahalgam and Baltal routes are open. End: The yatra will end on August 9 (Raksha Bandhan). Registration: 2,000 registrations are being done every day at centers like Saraswati Dham, Vaishnavi Dham etc. in Jammu.

Background:
The Amarnath Yatra is considered very sacred in Hinduism. Lakhs of devotees come for this yatra as a natural ice Shivling is formed in a cave located at an altitude of 3,888 meters. Special measures are taken by the government for security, health and logistical arrangements.

Note: Despite this accident, the yatra is proceeding smoothly and vigilance is being maintained by government officials.
